  • New Research in the Pipeline: Giving newborns of obese moms anti-diabetes medication to prevent future obesity…really?

CLICK HERE TO READ THE ARTICLE

Oh My Goodness. Reading this article has literally caused my blood pressure to rise! Research into the possibility of medicating newborn children of obese women to possibly prevent their future obesity …Children of women who have metabolic syndrome, pre diabetes, type 2 diabetes taking anti diabetes drugs in the hope that the DRUGS we give them soon after birth will decrease the chance for obesity later in their lives.

I really wish I could yell this from the rooftops. Metabolic syndrome, pre diabetes, type 2 diabetes have a GENETIC component. Yes, it is most likely the combination of multiple genes AND progression is hastened by stressors such as inactivity, high stress, high carb diet, pain/surgery, certain medications (Prednisone, Cortisone), and toxins. If a child is to be born with this gene, he will be born with this gene. The medication will not prevent that from happening. Once he is born, the stressors can be affected...he can stay active, decrease stress, monitor carb intake, be careful of glucose raising medications....but taking anti diabetic medication will only get him "taking anti diabetic medication" at an earlier age. A much earlier age. When he is growing. Side effects anyone?

So...the mothers who have the genes for metabolic syndrome plus the possibility of passing these genes to their children need to learn to eat/exercise before and during their pregnancy so they can give birth to a baby who is not born with a fatigued pancreas and an excess number of fat cells.

Why are we not looking to prevent the issue? You can’t change the child’s genes (at this point) but you can change the food source he/she is presented with prior to birth and how he learns to eat and stay active after his birth to affect his weight and health. Medication for babies? Really?

Most obese women who become pregnant, and women who have higher than normal blood sugar in pregnancy (these women have what I call Met B, metabolic syndrome, pre diabetes, type 2 diabetes, or gestational diabetes) pass higher levels of sugar to their babies. The baby's pancreas (yes, the baby's pancreas in utero) responds with insulin to match its sugar intake from the mother's blood supply. So...a mother who is presenting her unborn child with high levels of blood sugar is, in effect, over-feeding the child before it is born AND overstimulating his/her pancreas to become over-insulin producing.

These children are born over-fat! They are often close to or over 9 pounds. Did you know that many children become hypoglycemic immediately after birth when the cord is cut? This is because their pancreas is still over-producing insulin and the high sugar pipeline from the mother is cut off!

So now we are going to medicate our kids soon after they are born for metabolic problems their mother’s had during pregnancy. How about we admit that over 50% of women have Metabolism B...they may not yet be diagnosed with pre diabetes or type 2 diabetes, but they have the propensity. They can be told this when they are as young as late teens by their labwork. If they have Met B, they NEED to learn to change their diet/lifestyle not only to properly feed their baby in utero, but to properly feed their own body for a lifetime of health and then teach their children a healthy lifestyle.

My goodness. What a sad commentary.

  • AN OPEN LETTER TO MEHMET OZ….Spoonfuls of Vinegar and Raspberry Ketones do not a Healthy Person Make!

    Dear Dr. Oz,

You have made some ridiculous statements regarding nutrition in the past, most recently claiming that 4 tsp of vinegar/day could prevent or reverse diabetes (that was last week), but Monday’s information touting the use of a supplement called raspberry ketones as a “miracle fat burner in a bottle” takes the proverbial cake.

I have much to do these days, Mehmet. I am working with thousands of people who have metabolic syndrome, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, people who are honestly struggling with weight loss and the co-morbidities caused by excess weight….Every few days I have to stop valid work to set the record straight on some outlandish pronouncement you’ve made. So please, let this be the last time I have to correct any damage you have done by passing along false information. You are in the national spotlight and people want to trust what you say. Please stop the use of sensationalism as you make statements that are not proven, factual, or that may prove harmful.

And so….my response to Dr. Oz’s raspberry ketone “miracle fat burner in a bottle.”

We’ll start with a factual, understandable and scientific explanation of ketones.

Ketones are organic molecules that are produced when the body breaks down its own fat for energy. Ketones are an end-product of fat tissue burn. The level of ketones in the blood increases when there is not enough insulin present to allow glucose to enter the cells for energy. If a person is on a low carb diet taking in a minimal amount of carbohydrate and has used up liver and muscle sugar stores, the resultant low insulin levels in the blood will prompt the body to begin to break down its own fat. If a low carb dieter tested his your urine for ketones…and they are present...he would know that he is in a fat burning mode. ( Excess ketones in the blood exit the body in the urine). Ketones are acidic in nature and change the pH of the blood to become more acidic. It is recommended that a dieter in a fat burning mode drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and clear the ketones out of the blood and into the urine.

Aside from being on a low carb diet, if a person is in a state of starvation or on a very low calorie diet, his body will break down fat (and muscle) for energy. Long periods of physical activity can also cause the formation of ketones as the body moves to fat burning for energy. In addition, prolonged and intense stress can also trigger excess production of ketones. During prolonged stress, stress hormones rise and trigger the production of ketones as fat breaks down to create energy for a prolonged anticipated “fight or flight.”

If dangerously excessive amounts of ketones are present, it is indicative that the body might not be producing the hormone insulin. Insulin is a fat gain hormone and the total absence of insulin will cause rapid fat burning. This occurs at the onset of type 1 diabetes…you’ve probably heard stories of people who lost a large amount of weight without dieting right before they were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. In the same regard, if a person diagnosed with type 1 diabetes fails to take insulin or takes inadequate insulin for his/her blood sugar, ketones and blood sugar will quickly rise to very dangerous levels. When dangerous levels of ketones are present in the blood, the blood becomes very acidic and a potentially harmful or even fatal condition called ketoacidosis occurs

The treatment for someone with type 1 diabetes experiencing very high levels of ketones is to inject insulin that will immediately lower blood sugar and stop further fat burning (ketone formation).

Ketoacidosis and ketosis are not the same thing! When a person is in a fat burning mode (following a low carb diet) they are experiencing ketosis; not ketoacidosis

So….now that you understand what ketones are…and they ARE the end product of breaking down your own fat tissue…..does a supplement of raspberry ketones make any sense?

First of all, ketones are not really found in food, they are the by- product of fat burning in the body prompted by low or absent insulin, prolonged physical activity, or stress reaction.

How can a supplement called raspberry ketones possibly be a “miracle fat burner?” It turns out that a substance in raspberries that gives them their unique fragrance and contributes to their flavor is called “raspberry ketones.” Raspberry ketones have been used for years in the perfume and food industry to impart fragrance and flavor to soft drinks, ice creams, sweets, and perfumes.

The wacky diet craze involving raspberry ketones is playing on the idea that people have heard that ketones are present when they are burning fat, so it “must be the addition of ketones TO the blood that will speed fat loss”. Reality? Ketones are present in the blood from FAT YOU HAVE ALREADY BURNED.

I don’t think I need to go much further with explaining the ridiculousness of this gimmick except that… here is what Dr. Sarah G. Khan (PharmD) says about the possible safety issues that can arise from this supplement.

“I would not recommend this product to diabetics without speaking to their doctor because of the risk of blood sugar fluctuations,” she says. “People who have heart issues or high blood pressure would also not be good candidates for raspberry ketones because norepinephrine can have effects on blood pressure and heart rate. This may also have an effect on people who have COPD or asthma conditions and may make their conditions worse.”

Dr. Khan also notes that there’s not much data around what happens to people after they stop taking the supplements, or how long it’s safe to take them.

So there you have it. Mehmet Oz….please give me a break. It is very time consuming to have to set the record straight on statements and pronouncements that are not medically sound, proven, and can be potentially dangerous to the health and well-being of people who put their trust in you. Sensationalism may enhance your viewership but at what price? Not only are you potentially damaging people’s health…but also your own credibility.

  • THE MIRACLE BAND™…Wear it, Live it!

Have you seen it yet? Very cool, don’t you think? I’m very happy to release the official MIRACLE BAND™.

Over the past few years, I’m sure you’ve seen people wearing bands to signify their support of certain causes like Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong band or Breast Cancer Awareness’ Pink band. People wear these bands as symbols of their support and/or dedication to causes that they strongly believe in, dedicate their time to, or align with in a meaningful way.

I’ve been thinking about the importance of spreading the word about Metabolism B, a real physical condition that, left uncontrolled, can lead to a myriad of serious health problems such as pre diabetes, type 2 diabetes, overweight/obesity, hypertension, atherosclerosis, fatty liver disease, PCOS, infertility, breast/prostate/colon/pancreatic cancers, Alzheimer’s disease, depression/anxiety, osteoporosis and the list goes on.

Have you ever heard of a physical condition that has roots in so many other medical problems? The impact of knowing or not knowing that one has Metabolism B can determine the difference between leading a healthy life or a life rocked by illness.

As people who live the Metabolism/Diabetes Miracle lifestyle, let’s join together and take a stand to spread the word and show our support of the program that can stop this syndrome in its tracks….and in many cases, reverse it! The core program in The Metabolism and Diabetes Miracle can save the lives and health of so many…and thankfully, the key is not found in pill bottles or written on prescription pads.

There are many reasons to wear the MIRACLE BAND™; Spread the word about Metabolism B. Show your support of The Metabolism/Diabetes lifestyle. Wear it as a very personal reminder to “stay on program.” And… It’s the official bracelet of Miracle-Ville!

  • Does the use of statins really INCREASE the risk of developing type 2 diabetes???

The article: CLICK HERE TO READ

    My response:

Sometimes the answer is right in front of you, and you don't see it. Or....the focus of research is going one way and ignoring the obvious.

Type 2 diabetes is a progressive disease. It is typically a disease of older adults because it usually takes years to develop. These days, because the stressors that propel the train to diabetes are occuring earlier and more intensely, the age of onset averages 40 years of age.

Type 2 has genetic roots...multiple genes appear to be involved. We are born with our genes. Stressors appear to add up to trip the onset of metabolic syndrome...more stressors/longer time/greater intensity; pre diabetes...followed by more stressors/longer time/greater intensity; type 2 diabetes.

The stressors? emotional stress (family, marriage, economy, depression, anxiety) diet (high carb intake), weight gain (midline adiposity), physical stress (chronic pain, illness, surgery), inactivity (lack of physical activity), environmental stressors. As you can see, life in 2012 is full to the brim with stressors.

The candidates? Those with the genetic predisposition to type 2 diabetes who have applied stressors for a period of time....older men and post menopausal women (older women).

Because type 2 diabetes is linked to metabolic syndrome, by the time it is diagnosed, a person typically has hypertension, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, high LDL, low HDL, low Vitamin D....and then type 2 diabetes.

A patient is put on a statin for the elevated cholesterol....but this does nothing to stop the inevitable progression to type 2 diabetes....unless stressors are minimized before the diagnosis.

So...these postmenopausal women were started on statins....and then went on to develop type 2 diabetes. The statins did not cause the diabetes. The progression to diabetes was not halted and inevitably, diabetes ensued.

Does this mean we are “sitting ducks” just waiting for the inevitable diagnosis of type 2 diabetes because of our genetic roots? NO! Minimize or eliminate the stressors and decrease the chance of incurable type 2 diabetes.
